One of the latest inclusions deals with the implications of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) for cardiovascular health. GDM is a pregnancy complication that is becoming more prevalent with increasing rates of obesity and advancing maternal age. GDM not only increases risk for maternal and fetal complications during pregnancy, but also significantly increases a womans risk of both type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. The authors argue that medical therapies such as metformin that prevent progression to type 2 diabetes mellitus may be primarily important to prevent cardiovascular disease among women with GDM.
A newly published article on the anti-inflammatory property of chlorophyll revisits the folklore use of green leaves to treat inflammation. Chlorophyll a from fresh leaves showed potent anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice and formalin-induced paw edema in rats by inhibiting expression of a pro-inflammatory bacterial cytokine gene in cells. The authors conclude that chlorophyll a and its degradation products are promising anti-inflammatory agents for the development of phytomedicine or conventional medicine to treat inflammation and related diseases.
